Week 6, 2009 Summary - Breakfast Yay, Dinner Nay

Summary of the 6th week of 2009 (1st week of this exercise)

WAKING UP
Major fail - but A for effort, at least I am trying

GOING TO BED
Mostly fail. Some success.

BREAKFAST
I would call this a success. Half of the week I was able to make some eggs. The other half was fruit loops and a roll. Only skipped it once or twice. Considering that I was living on cupcakes for breakfast...pretty good.

LUNCH
I managed a salad or two. Score. Brought/made my lunch every day of the week. WOOT.

DINNER
In general, this is where all of the crap creeps into my diet. I completely lose discipline by the end of the day. Need to look into managing this. I didn't realize this and would have laid the blame at breakfast

FUNDS
I spent zero on lunch. I overspent on going out on the weekend. I am still managing the budget so far this month better than last (although last months failure we can blame on new furniture).

ORGANIZATIONAL
I managed to organize most of my documents and incoming mail. There is still some minor clean up to do
I managed to keep my space clean until the very end of the week, where I let the kitchen get out of control.

LEARNING
Attended two German classes
Listened to a number of podcasts on economics
Read several chapters in a fiction novel and a how to write fiction book

WRITING
A couple of blog posts
Two chapters in the novel - but both sketchy, need more work

WORK
Too much people mgmt, and not enough in terms of wireframing. Need to set goal to get portfolio in shape on wkend, soon.

ENTERTAINMENT/COMFORT
Saw Rush Hour 3
Ate cake with fam
Shopped for wedding bands

WORKOUT
FAIL. Seriously lame. I think I did ten pushups across the whole week.

So places to improve: DINNER, WORKOUT

Cake times two

Woke up stupidly late

BREAKFAST
The other half of the bag of Hot Tamales

LUNCH
2 pieces of really good pizza

MID AFTERNOON SNACK
-Aunt Marian's plum cake with cream
-Christiane's chocolate cherry cake

DINNER
Baked potato with sour cream
Small salad
Beer

LATE NIGHT SNACK
Jalapeno potato chips

Best Greek Food EVER

LUNCH
-Half a bag of Hot Tamales

AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING Greek food -
2 salads...it was too good to just have one
4 pieces of FREAKING AWESOME garlic bread
-half a cup of KILLER rice
-Suvlaki, gyro
-Broccoli
-Cola light
-Beer
-One spoonful of a really sucky dessert

Friday, February 6, 2009

Bock Bock. Bagock

WAKE-UP
Could not sleep at all. Woke up in relatively good time. Feel not so good due to lack of sleep

BREAKFAST
Two cups of coffee

LUNCH
-Green beans
-Red apple cabbage
How did I ever live without red apple cabbage? I hope this doesn't turn me purple or give me cancer or something for eating too much of it.

Made chicken salad to take to Detmold along with fruit and bread that I don't want to go bad.

DINNER
American diner in Bielefeld - Half a chicken sandwich, fries, and hot chocolate

Thursday, February 5, 2009

I wish I had a dog or a cat or a farm with thirty animals that could talk to each other and spin spiderwebs with words

WOKE UP
Woke up almost two hours after target time. I may never be able to rise early. I need a new strategy. Of course...I wasn't able to fall asleep until after 1AM. Should start there.

BREAKFAST
-Spinach omelette
-Red apple cabbage
-Two cups of coffee

Let Buggerhead in the back door, because he was meowing his fool head off. Put a load of laundry on to wash

GETTING MY LEARN ON
-Read a couple of chapters of Samit Basu's third book in his Game World trilogy. I will be sad when these end.
-Watched this video of a hero dog

MID MORNING SNACK

One day, I will wake up on time...

WAKE-UP
Woke up on time. Fell back to sleep without resetting alarm. Woke up late. FAIL. Took shower and made breakfast anyway. Started out the morning wrong and made it right.

BREAKFAST
-Spinach omelette with tomatoes
-Red apple cabbage
-Two cups of coffee
-Vitamin (man, I'm good today)

GETTING MY LEARN ON
-Wallstreet Journal daily news podcast
-Wallstreet Journal personal finance podcast
Nothing really new from either, aside from listening about how the Senate will probably pass the stimulus package and that everyone is shoving their pet projects into it. I think the stimulus package is a bad idea.
-Read article on UXMag about how some people built a portfolio out of companies they thought invested well in UX. I would be interested in seeing that portfolio performance today.

LUNCH:
-Small piece of foccacia bread
-Big apple

MID AFTERNOON SNACK
-Other half of foccacia bread
-0,7 liter water

DINNER
-Homemade hamburger patty
-Brussel sprouts
-Red apple cabbage
-2 big candy sticks, like the kind you get from the bank, but bigger

GYM
FAIL

Tuesday, February 3, 2009

You snooze, you loose

WAKE-UP
I snoozed for almost two hours. This is unacceptable. Skipped a shower, but did manage to iron a shirt.

GETTING MY LEARN ON
-Read this article sent by Jonda about a frugal woman in Germany. I can relate to most of what she wrote about. Bookmarked it to revisit in case she writes other things of interest.
-Listened to Econ Talk on my way into work. This is one of my favorite podcasts. I need to write up a little review. I can't say the latest episode was very productive, because it was mostly Russ Roberts crying about how Economics is so hard to define as a science and about how data can always be interpreted differently depending upon your perspective, but I still like to listen to him jabber.
-I read the second in a series by Samit Basu. He makes me jealous. More people should read this trilogy, because it is pretty fun.

BREAKFAST
Bowl of Fruit Loops, cup of coffee.

LUNCH
-Piece of foccacia bread
-Big apple

MID-AFTERNOON SNACK
Half a piece of Marcel's evil chocolate marzipan cake
0,7 liter water

DINNER
-One McDonald's cheeseburger. Sometimes when I am hungry, it is hard to walk through the Hauptbahnhof and not buy a snack to eat on the way home.
-Two bowls of fruit loops with milk
-One Twix bar. These suckers are almost gone, and then I can be good about not buying any replacements. I don't know what I was thinking when I bought them in the first place.
All in all -- major FAIL for dinner

EXERCISE
FAIL. I didn't even do the push-ups for the challenge. I will start tomorrow.

Monday, February 2, 2009

In the beginning, there were only seven push-ups

This is my first day of tracking all things good and healthy that I undertake. I am going to start out to see how disciplined I can be regarding documenting what I eat, how much I exercise, etc. We'll see how it goes.

I got up early this morning so that I could actually make myself breakfast and pack my lunch. I was so proud of myself. This saved €6.50 I would have otherwise spent on a daily cupcake and a salad. Most likely, I would have also broken down in the afternoon and purchased a Twix, another €.70. At the end of the month, I will be flipping the money I have saved into another "envelope" where I can spend the money in ways that are more fun.

WRITING
Major fail. I set the alarm to go off at 6AM, but didn't get out of bed until 6:30. I took a shower, and got back into bed until 7. Writing did not happen, but I did look up the nutritional value of a PBJ sandwich. People say this thing is healthy, but I am not so sure.

GETTING MY LEARN ON
-I listened to a Bloomberg podcasts on the way into work, this one was about the Motley Fools new book coming out, Something Something Millionaire. Waste of my time. Learned nothing new.
-I read an article on portrait photography

BREAKFAST
Spinach omelette, contains approx. 75g of frozen spinach, 3 egg whites, 1 med. chopped tomato, seeds removed, and a pat of butter. I also had a small glass of juice, and 2 cups of coffee. The coffee, I probably could have lived without, but it made me happy. Besides, I have read that coffee helps your brain fire better when you get old. Who knows.

MID MORNING SNACK
-1 orange. This was supposed to be a blood orange, but it was just a regular old orange orange. I was somewhat irritated at this discovery, since I paid extra for it to be red inside.
-3 cups of tea

LUNCH
Chicken salad, maybe 300 grams. Good stuff.

MID AFTERNOON SNACK
Piece of Focaccia bread
3 small fruity breath mints
0,7 liter water

DINNER
Apparently my German class turned off all of the discipline in my brain, because when I got home I ate: a bowl of Fruit Loops with milk, a Twix bar, half a dozen crackers with Gouda cheese, and half a bag of potato chips. Then I went to bed.

EXERCISE
I am not going tonight, since it is my first German class, which will keep me occupied past when my gym closes.

I took an afternoon break and walked around the corner to the market, since I would not get home until after the market closer to my house would be closed. What kind of supermarket carries neither jelly/jam/marmalade nor peanut butter? Germans!

I did, though, do seven push-ups as the initial effort in satisfying the 100 push-up challenge.
